At Leipzig University, a new research training group, ECO-N, is set to launch. This group, supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), centers on the Economics of Connected Natural Commons: Atmosphere and Biodiversity. The initiative involves collaboration among faculties specializing in Economics and Management Science, Life Sciences, and Physics and Earth System Sciences within the university. It also partners with esteemed research institutes like the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), and the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig.

ECO-N focuses on studying how we can responsibly manage and protect natural resources like diverse forests, fertile soils, local climate, and clean urban air. This initiative combines diverse fields of study and offers a structured program that equips participants with both specialized and well-rounded skills.

Around 30 researchers, both early-career and established, from economics, meteorology, and biology will collaborate within ECO-N. This collaborative environment is fostered through various events like a welcome week, annual retreats, and lectures by international experts, and synthesis activities. These efforts create a fair and inclusive workspace.

The doctoral programs in Economics, Meteorology, and Integrative Biodiversity Research offer top-notch education in their respective fields. They also include specialized modules designed specifically for ECO-N. Positions for this program will commence from September 1, 2024.

Applicants with a Master’s degree in economics, meteorology, biology, or related fields are sought. The research will be interdisciplinary, involving collaborative projects where groups of doctoral researchers from different backgrounds will delve deep into topics related to the atmosphere and biodiversity. Some project examples include understanding the impact of aerosols on climate change and financial markets, studying the effects of extreme heat waves, exploring air quality variations within cities, assessing the benefits of multifunctional soils, and suggesting optimal forest management approaches.
