Documents You’ll Need

For all applicants:

  • Tabular CV (include volunteer/community work)
  • Motivation letter
  • Degree/exam certificates (translated into German if not in English)
  • University transcripts (if studying in Germany)
  • Proof of German language skills (B2)
  • Academic recommendation letter from a professor or doctoral-degree holder (not older than 2 months)
  • Character recommendation letter (from a different person than the academic referee)
  • Admission or matriculation certificate from your German university

PhD applicants — also include:

  • A detailed research exposé (5–10 pages, German or English) covering your research question, methodology, scientific relevance, work schedule, and bibliography
  • A second academic recommendation letter from your doctoral supervisor (this replaces the character reference)
  • A formal confirmation of supervision from your doctoral advisor
