They’re widespread on various plants globally, possibly due to their plasmids—small DNA molecules within bacteria. Plasmids often carry specialized genes for surviving tough conditions and can be shared among bacteria, aiding quick adaptation.
The PhD project aims to analyze, classify, and assess the usefulness of plasmids found in Sphingomonas strains from different plant-related environments in Sweden. This involves studying the genetic makeup of numerous Sphingomonas chromosomes and their linked plasmids to understand how common plasmids are and identify signs of adaptation.
Additionally, the project will test the stability of various plasmids when exposed to specific treatments meant to eliminate them. Lastly, it will observe how strains with different numbers of plasmids compete when placed on plants, aiming to uncover the positive impact of plasmids on bacterial fitness. This research aims to reveal how plasmids aid bacteria in thriving on plant hosts, providing groundwork for potential future programs aimed at enhancing beneficial bacteria through controlled breeding.
