The primary objective of the PhD project is to explore how the spatial organization of microbial communities influences the emission of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide. The research aims to address two key questions: i) the reasons behind the occasional growth advantage of microorganisms producing nitrous oxide over those both generating and consuming it, and ii) how the spatial configuration of these microorganisms impacts the release of nitrous oxide into the atmosphere.
To unravel these questions, the project will employ a combination of experiments involving synthetic microbial communities and mathematical modeling. The overarching aim is to contribute to the development of strategies that mitigate the proliferation of nitrous oxide-producing microorganisms in both engineered and natural environments, consequently reducing the emission of nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. The PhD degree will be conferred by the Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Bern. The PhD student, stationed in the Microbial Community Assembly Group at Eawag, will be under the full supervision of Dr. David R. Johnson. Occasional travel to Yonsei University will be expected for training with Raman spectroscopy and to foster collaboration with the Yonsei University PhD student.
