Plants possess an incredible ability to regenerate, a trait extensively utilized in modern agriculture where superior genotypes are propagated through stem cuttings. Key to this successful propagation is the development of adventitious roots (AR), a post-embryonic process crucial for plant adaptation and clonal propagation. The precise genetic and molecular mechanisms orchestrating adventitious root initiation (ARI) have long remained elusive.

In our research utilizing Arabidopsis thaliana as a model plant, we’ve made strides in unraveling the molecular intricacies controlling ARI. Our investigations have unveiled multiple transcription regulators that integrate signals from auxin, jasmonate, and cytokinin pathways. We’ve proposed a model that positions adventitious rooting as an adaptive developmental response, a convergence point for several hormone regulatory pathways. Notably, our focus has homed in on two transcription factors from the WOX family, whose roles we aim to delve deeper into within this project.

Our approach integrates genetics, molecular biology, and protein biochemistry to explore the function of these WOX genes during AR development in Arabidopsis hypocotyl. Our goal is to elucidate the roles of these transcription factors further, particularly in identifying downstream targets crucial for repressing AR initiation. Through this comprehensive investigation, we aim to shed light on the intricate mechanisms guiding plant root development.
